Confessions of an X-pose Artist
He’s old enough to know better. He’s upset a few along the way, and like most he loves the shape of the female form. Alan Wright is of that increasingly rare species: a busy professional who somehow finds the time to paint girls rather than photograph them.
An insurance professional of 30 years standing and part-time artist, his work is vibrant, varied in style, but most importantly erotic. Well it can’t be anything else when his customers include some of the UK’s top porn stars!
“A lot of people have said that my work suggests I’d be younger. And some when they’ve met me have been nice enough to say that I look much younger!!” He turns 48 next month, and plans to continue painting commissions for some of the best looking girls in the UK. “Whilst the paintings might typically be a little bit naughty, and upset some, I like to think they tease and mystify.”
On one level they might appear quite simple, but rest assured they’re anything but. A painting will typically take as long as 20 hours all told, which means at the prices he currently charges he’ll never make a living from it. He’s got the measure of his worth though, and it’s the genuine appreciation on a model’s face when a painting is unveiled that makes it all worthwhile. “These girls know how to smile for the camera, although that’s not the way they need to be captured for one of my paintings.”
He works in acrylic on canvas. “Once you’re an accomplished artist (ahem!) you can do almost anything with acrylics. They blend easily, the colours are vibrant, and they dry quickly. I wouldn’t have the patience to work in oil, and watercolour simply doesn’t suit the subject matter.”
Of his recent commission for top model KazB he says: “‘Nympholepsy’ has marked a potential change in direction. Most of my earlier stuff is, unapologetically, influenced by Jack Vettriano. But Kaz wanted something that bit different, and I give her much of the credit for the success it turned out to be.” He was fortunate enough to hand over ‘Nympholepsy’ in person and meet the gorgeous lady herself, of whom he says: “At only 4 feet 10, she stands head and shoulders above most models. A very switched-on and intelligent young lady who will enjoy unparalleled success in the industry.”
That’s not to say all of his future work will be fantasy based though. “Ultimately the model is the customer and the output is to hang in her home, hopefully for many years to come. We’ll discuss ideas, organise suitable photographs to work from, and then the hard work begins.” Things don’t always go to plan though. “Since I started I’ve put my foot through two canvases! And there’s always an element of self-doubt as to whether I can capture a good enough likeness, although that’s not been an issue with a paid work….yet!”
Whilst he did a lot of drawing as a child, the painting didn’t come until later – much later. Not until 2001 in fact, when he discovered the work of Vettriano and boasted “I could paint like that.” So his son said “prove it” and bought him a set of acrylic paints for Father’s Day. “My early efforts were really quite ugly,” he laughs. “But the turning point came when I moved to a bigger canvas and suddenly found that the larger the work, the easier it became.”
The first paid commission came at the end of 2005 for top Welsh model Crystel-Lei. “A photographer friend was going to the BGAFD Christmas Party and said he’d show my work to see if any girls were interested in a commission. I thought he was wasting his time, but he proved me wrong!” The painting for Crystel-Lei was typical Vettriano in style, but it opened doors to other commissions. The master stroke came when Crystel used it at a three girl shoot, which immediately secured a further commission from Loz.
He’s happy to work for between £100 and £200 – for now. “I’m also now doing work for a couple of girls who don’t model, but definitely have the looks and figures to do so. I’ve got half a dozen commissions lined up currently, which will keep me going for several months.” That doesn’t mean that he’s not hungry for more orders though: “Commissions occasionally fall through, so the more work I have lined up the better.”
